If you’ve been focusing on links to build up your website, you’re going to encounter problems. While good, high quality links aren’t going to hurt your rankings, you should know that according to Google, having a high quality site that people enjoy visiting and would like to share with their friends will help you far more than links, no matter how good.
While answering questions about optimal ways to work with search engine optimization, Matt Cutts from Google said that one of the biggest things people were neglecting in web page development was focusing on links rather than content. The only things he mentioned that were bigger than this were not having a webpage in the first place or neglecting to include pertinent information.
In fact, if you go to the help page Google provides for ranking now and compare it to the previous page, you’ll notice a conspicuous difference.
The page used to read: “In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by increasing the number of high-quality sites that link to their pages.”
Now, though, it reads: “In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by creating high-quality sites that users will want to use and share.”
Why is this important? It changes the face of SEO as we know it. The process and the thought that goes into your work for search engine optimization will have to change dramatically.
How? As Mr. Cutts said, the best way to do so is to make your site enjoyable. And not just your site; your entire business and the way you go about it can affect your rankings on Google. If you make your site and your business in such a way that people want to share it with their friends, you’ll have better luck with your online rankings.
